Shipping Wars on A&E – Recap of Episode “Baja or Bust”

Episode 9 is jam packed full of interesting events for the transporters. Marc finds himself heading to Mexico to pick up a $100,000 award winning Baja Truck. There are strict time constraints for this load and it is important that Marc stays on schedule. He must protect this prized possession while on its way to the track for a famous race, but then runs into some problems with directions. The back roads of Tijuana aren’t as kind to Marc as he had hoped for, forcing him to get resourceful or possibly putting him out of business. He incurs many debts along the way, such as customs papers, etc. This then takes away from the big profit that he was so desperately counting on. On another note, Scott and Susie take their boat hauling knowledge to the next level when having to transport a wooden pirate ship across the US. What would transport be without problems, right? They continued to have problems keeping the boat tied down to the trailer. With the many years of problem solving, Scott and Susie find a way to keep that old ship anchored down.

N-Motion Auto Transport Tips for Shipping a Vehicle

Scheduling:
When choosing to transport your vehicle, one should plan and schedule the auto shipping at least 3-4 weeks in advance before you move. This will give plenty of time to arrange for a car hauler to pick up your vehicle. The more time that is allotted, the better the price and availability of car movers. Make sure that someone, that is trustworthy, will be available at the time of pickup and delivery for multiple reasons. N-Motion Auto Transport offers a Door-to-Door service, which makes it easier for customers to go on with daily activities and not having to sit in a parking lot somewhere waiting on an dependable auto shipper. Some residential neighborhoods do not permit certain sized vehicles to enter the area. So, in that case, the driver will get as close as he can to the front door by asking the shipper to meet at a nearby shopping center or garage for the pickup or delivery of the vehicle.

Insurance:
This is a very important aspect of the auto transport process. Make sure the company that you choose to transport your vehicle has adequate insurance to cover the full value of the vehicle. A BOL (bill of lading) will be filled out on the condition of the vehicle for any dents, scratches, or damages of any sort. This will be signed by both parties at pickup and delivery. ALWAYS check the vehicle for any damages and take pictures too if you feel more comfortable, for these will come in handy if any unclaimed damages are noted at delivery.

Personal Belongings or Household Goods:
The driver of the car carrier is not responsible for any item left in the vehicle before, during, or after it has been delivered. Make sure to remove any personal possessions prior to pickup. If something does have to go with the vehicle, notify the driver and place it in the trunk for safe storage.

Smera Campaign, One-Person Plug-in Changes Hauling, car transporters, car hauler

It might not be as sexy as the Porsche electric car, but Daimler’s Lumeneo subsidiary showed off an interesting one-passenger Smera electric car at the Geneva Auto Show; it might create a different framework for car transporters, for it is small enough to be racked two abreast on a standard-sized car hauler. You’d have to create a new type of car hauler with four wheel slots rather than two, but I’ve seen similar set ups for hauling golf carts, where they move them two abreast on both levels.

It’s not a family car by any stretch of the imagination, but if you’re looking for a second-car for a commuting spouse, you don’t need a ten-passenger van to drive yourself to work. When I was looking for a new car for commuting to work three years ago, I would have considered the Smera as an option, for I played with the idea of a moped or other low-power motorcycle; the Smera comes close to being an enclosed motorcycle with four wheels rather than two.

The small nature of the Smera might scare off some buyer, fearful that they’d get Smeraed all over the road if hit by a semi. The Smera might create some interesting options for urban commuters; sharing a parking space might be one of them, which might slide a few people away from mass transit. It might steal customers from more conventional-sized plug-ins, but might also slide some people up from light motorcycles; the market research for it might require throwing out a lot of automotive research models.

Disoriented Car Hauler in FL?, Winds Up in Ditch Headed Wrong Way

Here’s an interesting story about a car hauler crash in southern Florida. The hauler turned over in a ditch at 2:30PM heading eastbound on FL-66 just west of Sebring. The driver was stated to have been bringing a full load of used cars back from Nova Auto Sales to a customer in north Florida; his story was that he had to dodge an oncoming car and found himself in the ditch.

There’s a problem with that story; the Nova Auto Sales that shows up on a Google search is in Miami, which is where the driver in question lives. If the driver were heading north with a load of trucks from Miami, he would not likely being heading eastbound on FL-66. There isn’t a good reason to be heading east into Sebring if you were coming from Miami heading north. The driver would have had to have gone further west, then doubled back east on FL-66 for some reason.

He might be logically heading westbound, having taken US-27 north out of the Miami area; truckers often use US-27 in that area as an alternative to other north-south highways in order to avoid weigh stations. The trucker could then jogged over on FL-66 in Sebring to grab US-17 heading north towards Winter Haven and Lakeland; even there, using US-98 a bit further north to hook up with US-17 would have made more sense if he was angling towards I-75.

Given that background, the driver here may have been a bit disoriented or somewhat less than truthful. The DOT was looking into the case and there might be reason to double-check the car transport driver in this case.

Take 3, They're Small, A Look at Take 3 Trailers

I can get major “husband points” if I bring home Blue Bell ice cream. Blue Bell is based out of Brenham, TX; the old ad copy had "The Cows think Brenham is Heaven." That came to mind as I continued to review car-transport trailer makers. Take 3 Trailers is based out of Brenham as well. Dave Brubeck already took Take 5 and Take 6 was already taken by a good gospel/jazz group, so they had to set their name sights lower.

However, a Take 3 can take five or six car haulers, or even seven with optional equipment. Most of their models are single-level haulers, but they do have a Six Pac hauler. That could be problematic when you pull through the weigh station and tell the state’s finest that you “picked up a Six Pac at my last stop.”

The lack of Great Lakes dealers that I saw in Cottrell isn’t a problem. They have dealers in Coruna, MI and Lima, OH on the I-75 corridor and in Morris, IL along I-80 west of Joliet. Interestingly, they have few dealers in the southwest, with only a dealer in Mt. Pleasant, TX between Florida and Arizona; the Northeast is another hole in their dealer network.

Take 3 also seems to cover truck supplies for everything from pickups on up to your Class 8 semis; this page has grill guards and other accessories to trick out your Texas Cadillac.

They may not have the scope of Cottrell, but they seem to have a broad range of trailers that fit every niche; the one weak spot is that the Six Pac is the only large car hauler that they have in their trailer line.
